ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes two frameworks, the cascade model of technology evolution and the concept of technology potency. It examines some of the issues involved in understanding software. Software is a difficult technology to understand strategically. It is important for technology management professionals to get a better handle on software technology. Specific issues addressed include defining software technology and developing frameworks for the strategic analysis of software technology. To assist in the strategic analysis of technology, a number of frameworks have been developed. The Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University is one of the foremost authorities on software technology. Software technology is any technology that is implemented as computer software or that supports the development, operation, understanding, and/or maintenance of software. Software is the set of instructions that tell a general purpose device, a computer, what to do to perform specific function such as computing a payroll.
