ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the broad use of the term "technology". A poster advertising a company's new sport shoes also touts its product as a "new technology." Those who are trying to understand technology from a position of love emphasize the ideality of technology and either minimize or fail to see altogether the human component. The observation that technology is not an isolated phenomenon may seem obvious but given the fact that it is precisely this observation that often goes unheeded, it bears bringing up. Technology in its most robust sense, then, involves the invention, development, and cognitive deployment of tools and other artifacts, brought to bear on raw materials and intermediate stock parts, with a view to the resolution of perceived problems. With respect to technology and the humanities, there is no conspiracy.
