ABSTRACT

This chapter shows what areas of life change is expected, and in whom it is hoped the change will occur. It analyzes how applicants expect this change to come about and how long they think it will take. Both membership in the Friends and previous psychotherapy make applicants more likely to hope for changes in sexual life. What applicants thought about various sources of therapy and how they rated them is important in understanding their final choices: It becomes clear that money is crucial, but there are also other factors, such as the entire style of therapy one would like. Nonetheless, those who had seen psychotherapists were least concerned about money, since of course they did have the experience of meeting their payments. The mixture of concern about money but also about other matters is evident in the reasons applicants gave for going to a clinic rather than to a private psychiatrist.
