ABSTRACT

This chapter asserts that homosexuality is the major adaptation employed by women in a prison setting. It describes the principal roles of female homosexuals and some of the functions the particular roles serve for their incumbents. The chapter distinguishes, in greater detail, the jailhouse turnout from the true homosexual and review several characteristics of the homosexual population that differentiate it from the non-homosexual group. Costume and behavior manifestations are most important in identifying the homosexual type referred to as the butch or stud broad. Many women in the butch role appear masculine in terms of body structure and physiognomy. The homosexuals, male and female, who most frequently come to the attention of the police, are the male queens and the drag butches. There are also significant differences between butches, femmes and non-homosexuals in regard to race and whether the inmate came from a broken home.
