ABSTRACT

Hitherto the only critical edition of Hume’s essays on economics has been that contained in the third volume of The Philosophical Works of David Hume, edited by T. H. Green and T. H. Grose. Published in 1875, this excellent edition has been out of print since 1918. It reproduces the text of the edition of 1777, which “though posthumously published was Hume’s own definitive edition of his works” (Jessop). It also reports all substantive divergences from the final text occurring in the many editions published in Hume’s lifetime.
