ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book introduces case study methodology in adapted physical education (APE) for exploring the challenges and rewards of learning to teach individuals with and without disabilities in a variety of physical activity contexts. It provides a series of cases representing various contexts from self-contained APE classes, inclusive general physical education (GPE) and youth sports, to community recreation and health clubs. Case studies methods are used as effective teaching tools to promote discussion, problem solving, and decision making for the realistic concerns of teachers in school settings. Culturally relevant pedagogy "means that teachers have a moral responsibility to be culturally responsive or to design curricular programs that are responsive to the educational needs of learners from diverse cultural backgrounds". This suggests that culturally relevant pedagogy recognizes the impact of culture, language, ethnicity, gender, and other variables that define students as different.
