ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study of Danny who is a 5th grader and has a congenital double leg amputation. The exclusion and limited opportunities in GPE did not bother Danny until one day during recess the children on the playground ask him to play soccer. As he begins to play soccer, he feels more mobile on the grass. Danny continues to be involved in recess for about a week. Then one day Ms. Callahan sees him playing soccer. She is extremely alarmed and tells Danny to stop playing. Danny becomes withdrawn, depressed, and does not do anything at recess. The concern is that Danny may get kicked in the head or body and that he may trip the other children. Danny can play goalie on his hands, and the ball will have to be lower than his hands outstretched above his head in order to score. Playing goalie will involve a lot of movement and participation on Danny's part.
