ABSTRACT

Mr. Wickstrom is a special education teacher at Southern High School in charge of a self-contained class of eight students with moderate to severe mental retardation. His students are integrated in many activities at Southern such as physical education, drama, woodworking, and lunch. All of Mr. Wickstrom's students have jobs around the school depending on their ability. Mr. Wickstrom looks around the room at his students and notes that they are overweight. He realizes that through his program his students are getting fast food or a convenience store snack almost every day. During his planning period, Mr. Wickstrom goes to the gym to talk to Mrs. Lacey, one of the PE teachers at Southern. He explains his concern about his students and asks her if she has any thoughts. Mrs. Lacey suggests creating a special aerobics and weight-training program. Mr. Wickstrom really feels that this is a great opportunity to be involved in a regular community program.
