ABSTRACT

South Side High School has a large, diverse student population. Jacques, a physical education teacher and coach, has taught and coached baseball and soccer at the school for 3 years now. Jacques was hired primarily to teach 9th-through 12th-grade physical education. Jacques is thankful that he has reliable support from Ms. Washington, a teacher assistant. Jacques is a very friendly person who gets along well with his colleagues and most of the students at the school. The differences between Jacques and Marcus stem primarily from their teaching styles. Jacques starts out by developing a friendly and respectful relationship with students as he establishes his role as a teacher with them. Marcus, on the other hand, starts out disciplined and demanding. By comparison, Jacques's favorite approach to resolving conflicts is using the talking bench approach. Although Jacques and Marcus have different didactic approaches to teaching and behavior management, both approaches seem to work.
