ABSTRACT

Toni Richardson is an itinerant teacher entering her second year of teaching APE in central Ohio. Toni is delighted that her classes are composed of students with varied disabilities from culturally and ethnically diverse backgrounds. When asked about involving all students in class activities and learning experiences, Toni says that there is one student who comes to mind. This student is Roc, who has severe mental retardation coexisting with cerebral palsy. Toni is frustrated because she feels that she should be doing more for Roc, yet she also understands the need to keep the flow of the class going. In addition to pedagogical concerns regarding providing effective instruction for Roc, Toni has several students who present behavior management problems. Despite her concerns relative to behavior management, Toni believes that her main issue as an itinerant APE teacher is simply a lack of quality equipment.
