ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study of Mr. Brewer who is a veteran elementary school teacher with 25 years of teaching experience at Broadwater Elementary School in southwest Virginia. There are very few children with disabilities who live in the small town where Mr. Brewer teaches. Although these students need extra attention, more structure, and more modifications to be successful, Mr. Brewer manages to include each child successfully. He makes a mental note to track down Mrs. Brown later in the day to find out more. That afternoon Mr. Brewer wanders down to Mrs. Brown's special education room. Mrs. Harrison hands Mr. Brewer a very detailed medical report, then proceeds to describe the fifth grader, Dwayne's disabilities: severe, quadriplegic cerebral palsy; severe mental retardation; and limited vision. Mrs. Collins, the principal, tells Mr. Brewer that Dwayne's IEP from his previous school prescribed physical education three times per week in a small group with other children with similar disabilities.
