ABSTRACT

Bill loves the independence he has as the only physical education teacher at Smithtown Elementary School. Brooke is a 3rd grader at Smithtown who is perhaps the best-known student in the school. Bill has some unique problems with Brooke in physical education. Even though Mrs. Phillips, her teacher assistant, always accompanies Brooke to PE class, Brooke has a particularly difficult time in the gym setting. Even on the best of days when Brooke is lucid and relatively compliant, her motor skills are significantly delayed. Bill knows that he needs the expertise of an APE specialist who has had training and experience with children with autism, but his last experience with one wasn't very positive. Bill has never met Ms. Cohen, but he has heard from other PE colleagues that she is very pleasant, knowledgeable, and helpful. The plan is for Ms. Cohen to observe Brooke one day in GPE class and then briefly talk with Bill.
