ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts of the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book contributes to a better understanding of the politics of pharmaceuticals and access to medicines in India and beyond. It appears at a defining moment for the pharmaceutical sector in India and globally. A wealth of information on India's pharmaceutical industry is readily available. The book offers a few observations about global industry trends and their implications for India. Analysts tend to view the industry as a source of exchange value for the purpose of capital accumulation or as producer of use value to enhance public health. Policies and programs in three core regulatory areas of safety and efficacy controls for purpose of public health, access and equity, and assisting industry development, are promoted by different departments and agencies, which are in turn linked to distinct groups of social and economic interests, including business associations and firms, health professionals, and consumers.
