ABSTRACT

This chapter summarizes key concepts from the videotape: "An Introduction" to guide participants in 5S implementation team during implementation work on the floor. The videotape gives an overview of the 5S System and its benefits. Based on this introduction, the team will think about their own target area and together create an ideal vision for the way their workplace could be. The 5S System consists of 5 activities with names that begin with "S": sort, set in order, shine, standardize, and sustain. Sort involves sorting through the contents of an area and removing unnecessary items. Set in Order involves arranging necessary items for easy and efficient access and keeping them that way. Shine involves cleaning everything, keeping it clean, and using cleaning as a way to ensure that area and equipment is maintained as it should be. Standardize involves creating guidelines for keeping the area clean. Sustain involves education and communication to ensure that everyone follows the 5S standards.
