ABSTRACT

Family Anatidae contains approximately 145 species, with representatives in all zoogeographical regions. Of the thirty one found in the Afrotropical Region, twenty four are known in Kenya. In Afrotropical region Fulvous whistling duck spreads south (S) of 15°N, apart from the arid areas of east (E) Somalia and the SW, and the lowland equatorial forests of the W. In Kenyan region it is found on all types of relatively quiet water, including coastal creeks and estuaries, mainly below 1500 m. In Afrotropical region the White-faced whistling duck spread S of 15°N, excepting the driest areas of E Somalia and the SW interior, and interior areas of the Congo basin. In Afrotropical region Egyptian goose spreads S of 15°N, apart from some areas in and around the Congo basin. In Kenyan region Spur-winged goose can occur on most types of inland water up to 3000 m, but prefers freshwater, particularly floods near lakes and swamps.
