ABSTRACT

Family Accipitridae contains around 211 species, with representatives throughout the world. Seventy two occur in the Afrotropical Region, which is very rich in diurnal raptors and particularly so in the larger ones that inhabit savannah and other open habitats. Fifty five of the species that occur in the Afrotropical Region have been recorded in Kenya. In Afrotropical Region, Palm-nut vulture spreads north (N) to Senegambia, Nigeria, Chad, south (S) Sudan and Kenya, but avoiding the dry SW and much of interior Tanzania. In Afrotropical Region, Short-toed snake eagle widely distributes S of 15°N, apart from the equatorial lowland forest areas of the west (W). In Afrotropical Region Harrier hawk widespread S of 15°N, apart from the dry areas of E Somalia, Ethiopia and the SW. The Mountain Buzzard is apparently resident, and is ecologically separated from the closely related Augur Buzzard in denser habitats. In Afrotropical Region Black kite including its Palearctic races, is widespread S of 18°N.
