ABSTRACT

Family Falconidae contains sixty one species, represented in all of the world's zoogeographical regions. Nineteen occur in the Afrotropical Region and all have been recorded in Kenya. The Afrotropical species are never common, and are often greatly outnumbered by their Palearctic counterparts, particularly the Eastern Red-footed Falcon, Hobby, Kestrel and Lesser Kestrel. In Afrotropical Region Pygmy falcon occupies two distinct areas: in the NE, it is known from interior Tanzania N through Kenya and NE Uganda to S Sudan, Ethiopia and Somalia, while in the S it occurs from N South Africa to Namibia and Botswana. The Palearctic calidus is a regular winter visitor Oct-Apr, mainly to the C highlands W to Mau Narok 61D and the coast. In Afrotropical Region African hobby found mainly between 4°N and 14°N, from the W coast to Ethiopia, and thence S through East Africa and the E Zaire borders to S Zaire, Zimbabwe and E South Africa.
