ABSTRACT

Family Numididae contains seven species, endemic to Africa. Four are resident in Kenya. In Afrotropical Region Vulturine guineafowl found from northeastTanzania through mainly east (E) areas of Kenya to south (S) Sudan, SE Ethiopia and Somalia. Distribution in Kenya represents the W limit of the range. In Kenyan Region they found in dry, open, bushed and wooded country, exceptionally up to 1900 m. Range is 86% below 1000 m, 70% within 0–500 mm rainfall areas, and 95% arid-semiarid. This guineafowl can exist without drinking, and there are reports from 56% of the most arid squares. In Kenyan Region the Kenya Crested guineafowl is a rather retiring species of forests, woodland and thickets, including groundwater forests at Kibwezi 88B and Kitovu 100B, and riparian thickets at Ngulia 101A and Voi 101B, up to 1800 m. The Kenya Crested Guineafowl forms part of a superspecies with the Crested Guineafowl.
