ABSTRACT

Little Grebe is found on waters of all kinds, but is not markedly correlated with permanent rivers in dry country, such as, the Daua 7C 19AB and much of the Tana 64AB 65ABD 78B. Two factors make the Little Grebe far more widespread than the other two grebes, both in Kenya and in the Afrotropical Region as a whole. Firstly, it occurs and breeds throughout their altitude categories and up to 3000 m. Secondly, it can exist and reproduce on very small waters provided they have some fringing vegetation and a rich bottom flora. Larger waters support its main populations but, at the onset of heavy rains, a proportion of the birds on these rapidly spread to floods and other seasonal waters, where breeding occurs if these temporary waters are sufficiently long-lived. Black-necked Grebe is a highland bird of Ethiopia, Kenya and N Tanzania, widespread S of 20°S.
