ABSTRACT

A Palearctic species that winters off the coasts of West (W), southwest (SW) and northeast (NE) Africa, and occasionally appears inland. Flocks of up to hundreds of phalaropes appear to be regular, mostly during Nov and Jan-Mar, off the coast, but their remoteness, this species' close resemblance to the Grey Phalarope, and the fact that many of the observations are made by ornithologically inexperienced fishermen, have all combined to prevent identification to species level in most cases (Br). Inland, this phalarope is regular at L Turkana, where flocks build up to 30 during the Oct and Apr migration periods (HH), and it also seems to be annual or nearly so at L Nakuru 62A, where up to six have been seen. Three species, which breed in the Holarctic and then migrate S to the S oceans or the Neotropical Region. All three are known in the Afrotropical Region. One is a regular migrant and another a rare vagrant to Kenya.
