ABSTRACT

Approximately 290 species, with representatives throughout the world. Only 27 are found in the Afrotropical Region, with 19 of these in Kenya. A locally common, open country pigeon that requires rocks and cliff ledges on which to breed, and which, since early this century, has also shown an increasing tendency to colonise buildings. Speckled Pigeons are known at 500–3000 m, and absence from the East (E) lowlands is at present paralleled in adjacent South (S) Somalia. The White-winged Dove is closely related to the Ring-necked and Mourning Doves, and all three are sympatric (Sn), at least at OSD scale. The Red-eyed Dove has only 21% of its squares arid, and occurrence in the dry N and E is mainly in locally moist situations. The Laughing Dove is common in relatively open habitats, including gardens and town centres, up to 3000 m but mainly below 1800 m.
