ABSTRACT

Wilson's storm petrel breeds in the Antarctic and nearby latitudes, and then migrates into the north (N) hemisphere. It occurs along both seaboards of Africa, where it is the commonest storm petrel. There have been several subsequent records, including daily onconfirmed sightings by fishermen in Dec. It may well be a regular visitor during postbreeding migration Apr-Sept, while records in other months could reflect non-breeders temporarily resident in the tropics. Leach's storm petrel breeds in the N Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and then migrates S to the equator and south (S) tropics for the N winter. Thus it is regular on the W African seaboard but very rare in the Indian Ocean. Matsudaira's storm petrel breeds only on the Volcano Isles, S of Japan, and then migrates W into the equatorial Indian Ocean, where it is most common in the W between June and Sept.
