ABSTRACT

118 species, principally in the Afrotropical and Oriental Regions, and absent from the Americas. 50 (42%) occur in the Afrotropical Region, and half of these are recorded from Kenya. No migratory movements are known, but the abundant and ecologically catholic Common Bulbul (609) probably wanders (Br). Most members of this family are at least superficially similar inhabitants of forest. Pycnonotus barbatus is one of the commonest and most widespread of birds, found up to at least 3000 m in any habitat except forest interior and open, bushless and treeless terrain. Andropadus virens is a shy and retiring but vocal species, found in forests, particularly along their edges, and in secondary growth and thickets. Andropadus gracilirostris is fairly common in forest canopy and open edge areas, including suburban gardens in Nairobi 75B, up to 2400 m. Andropadus tephrolaemus is common in highland forest, including the bamboo zone, at 1850–3000 m.
