ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we enter the slippery world of cross-cultural generalizations about ethnic mindsets. While it is clearly relevant, it is also a more difficult field and open to more counter-examples and criticisms. The XC traits described here are clearly based on considerable consensus, reflection, and my specialized education in Asian studies, Asian residency, and published comparative research. The generalizations stated here as mindsets — which are not refuted by a few true counter-examples — will remain controversial to some and sensitive to a few. However, these generalizations are empirically verifiable and falsifiable (in theory if not always in field practice) and I remain receptive to civil debate if serious doubts arise. 28
