ABSTRACT
In this section we will begin a systematic study of field extensions. The theory of field extensions is, of course, contained in the theory of ring extensions, but we will see that it has a very special flavor, due to the special properties of fields. Moreover, as was pointed out at the end of section 10, a good understanding of field extensions will also help us to study integral ring extensions.
