ABSTRACT

Occupational health involves a certain professional at the working level known as an industrial hygienist. Chemical hazards arise from excessive airborne concentrations of mists, vapors, gases or solids that are in the form of dust or fumes. These can be inhaled, ingested, or absorbed into the body. Physical hazards include excessive levels of electromagnetic and ionizing radiation, noise, vibration, and extremes of temperatures and pressures. Biological hazards are caused by insects, molds, fungi, and bacterial contamination. Deficiency of oxygen in the atmospheres of confined spaces is usually a problem of industry and construction projects. The professional will also specify the type of personal protective equipment and clothing required for each hazard. The industrial physician is as concerned with workers' health as the industrial hygienist. The physician will perform pre-placement and periodic examinations of employees working with health hazards. Free consultation assistance is available to one in establishing a healthful workplace.
