ABSTRACT

This chapter details the basic steps needed to prepare us to handle emergencies in our workplace. Emergencies include, but are not limited to, accidental releases of toxic gases, chemical spills, fires, explosions, and personal injury. The effectiveness of response during emergencies depends on the amount of planning and training performed. Responsible individuals should be selected to coordinate the work of the emergency response team. Beside emergency means of communication, a method of communication is also needed to alert employees of the evacuation. Alarms should be audible to all the people in the plant. Emergency response teams should be trained in the types of possible emergencies and the emergency actions to be performed. Training is important to the effectiveness of an emergency plan. Effective personal protective equipment is essential for any person who may be exposed to potentially hazardous substances. During an emergency, it is often necessary to secure the area to prevent unauthorized access and to protect records and equipment.
