ABSTRACT

There is no doubt that in many organizations the safety committee has been a worthwhile part of the accident prevention program. Safety is everybody's business, therefore, any problem-solving group can take on safety problems, whether or not it is called a safety committee. It is Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA's) opinion that a safety and health committee, when properly run, can be used to fight more than one battle for management. The cost of plant insurance premiums and workers' compensation insurance may be lowered as a benefit of committee work. Many employers have reaped substantial savings after energetic committees brought about a drastic reduction in accident and injuries. Genuine support for a working safety committee also provides an opportunity to demonstrate good faith when the OSHA compliance office comes to our place. The work of the committee looks at ways to improve the safety and health climate of the organization and to involve the employees in the process.
