ABSTRACT

Our Occupational Safety and Health Program is an essential activity. Its goals are to provide a work and physical environment for our employee that is as free as possible from potential hazards. Self-evaluation, with subsequent corrective action, should provide satisfactory assurance that our establishment has identified the problems that would be cited by a State inspector. The goals of our safety and health program should reflect the priorities of our workplace and should serve as the underlying principles for more specific policies and procedures. Depending on the size of our establishment and the nature of our operations, our program will need to include elements of first aid, safety, industrial hygiene, and occupational health. The science of industrial hygiene deals with the identification, evaluation, and control of those physical, chemical, and biological agents and psychological stresses in the workplace that may affect workers' health. Accurate injury and illness records are invaluable in providing information for our safety and health program.
