ABSTRACT

The correct choice of adhesive is of paramount importance if the structure is to perform the functions for which it was designed and withstand the hostile environments to which it will be subjected. The choice is the final responsibility of the user of the adhesive and no one else. The decision must be made by utilizing all the data possible. The three considerations—cure parameters, adhesive form, and cost—can determine the basic type of adhesive to be used. When evaluating the temperature regime that the adhesive system will need to endure, the total time the adhesives will be exposed to normal operating temperatures must be determined. The most important consideration in adhesive selection is the expected environment to which the adhesive will be exposed. The application requirements for adhesive primers should also be considered when it is planned to use them in conjuction with an adhesive.
