ABSTRACT

Emission sources of volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) in a chemical plant can be classified into three groups: process point sources, process fugitive sources, and area fugitive sources. Process point sources of VOCs and HAPs can be individually defined for a chemical plant. Although typically more numerous than process point sources, process fugitive sources can also be individually defined for a chemical plant. VOC and HAP control measures for area fugitive sources typically focus on release prevention measures such as the use of covers or chemical adjustments in terms of the pH and oxidation state for liquid wastes. HAPs can be classified relative to the type of compounds and the form in which they are emitted from process point, process fugitive, or area fugitive sources. The industry produces basic inorganic chemicals for either direct use or use in manufacturing other chemical products.
