ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on a handful of issues that present challenges to the 1990s industrial hygienist. In the 1990s, industrial hygienists have been introduced to a plethora of issues that have challenged traditional approaches to problem-solving, and forced the development of innovative techniques and protocols to protect the health of the working population. IAQ surveys involve the use of instrumental techniques and approaches that can be somewhat different than sampling protocols typically employed when evaluating worker exposure in the industrial sector. Microbial organisms typically implicated in indoor air quality episodes can be classified into three major categories: bacterial, fungal, or protozoan agents. Engineering controls are necessary to minimize and prevent transmission of airborne concentration levels of the TB bacterium. The International Standards Organization (ISO) has established management system standards to ensure that quality protocols and principles are incorporated into manufacturing processes and production procedures.
