ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the acquired T cell-mediated responses, although many different effector systems can be involved in the cell-mediated immune functions. It relates the recent research developments on avian cytotoxic T cells (CTL) and interleukins (IL) to the knowledge of mammalian CTL and IL. The chapter refers Supernatant fluids from mitogen-stimulated lymphocytes with IL-2 as conditioned medium. The presence of CD4 CTL has been described as part of the immune responses against herpes simplex virus type | and influenza virus. They were unable to demonstrate the transfer of the vaccine strain of infectious laryngotracheitis (ILT) virus (ILTV), but a report by T. J. Bagust suggested that ILTV can be latently present in tracheal tissue. CTL are most often demonstrated using in vitro isotope-release assays. The isotope of choice is 51Cr, and the assay is commonly referred to as a chromium-release assay or Chromium-release assay (CRA).
