ABSTRACT

The morphology of balanomorph larvae, as exemplified by the larvae of Semibalanus balanoides,* is described. An attempt is made to consider the nauplius and cyprid as functioning planktonic larvae. Although larval structures and organ systems are considered under separate headings it is their contribution to the survival and maintenance of the planktotrophic nauplius within coastal waters, and the cyprid’s ability to make contact with solid intertidal substrata, that are emphasised.
