ABSTRACT

Many times, when making conversions from one unit to another, people become confused about whether to multiply or divide by the conversion factor. The box method of conversions was developed as an aid in making that decision. To use the box method of conversions, first set up the boxes. The conversion equation should have the number one on the left side of the equation and a number greater than one on the right side of the equation. The box method cannot be used when the conversion equation includes a decimal fraction. The box method may be used when converting from cubic feet to gallons and from gallons to pounds. To convert from one flow unit to another, several conversion equations would be required. The box method of flow conversions incorporates 12 conversion equations and many more conversion possibilities into one diagram.
