ABSTRACT

For the construction of the new high speed railway in Germany, the section of the federal highway A3 near the Frankfurt international airport must be crossed by a 280 m long tunnel with a cross section of about 150 m2. Here the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) with special measures was applied in view of the large cross section of the tunnel and the extremely difficult conditions under which the structure is to be built. Relating to the project supervision ARCADIS Trischler & Partner have carried out a backcalculation to analyze the tunnel performance. The construction concept, the evaluation of the measurements and the results of the conducted finite element analyses will be presented and discussed.
