ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces basic concepts of the theory of finite dimensional algebras which are of importance in quadratic form theory. We discuss division algebras, central and simple algebras and study the first examples: matrix algebras and the algebra of real quaternions. We presuppose some acquaintance with matrices of linear transformations of vector spaces.
