Witt’s cancellation theorem

A fundamental result in bilinear algebra is the cancellation theorem. This was first proved by E. Witt [89] in 1937. We prove in this chapter several versions of Witt’s theorem and, as the first example of application, we prove the Jacobi-Sylvester inertia theorem.
