ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the 12 applications of biofilter. These include ARA-Rhein biofilter, BBA-Witham biofilter, BBA-Chicago biofilter, Poughkeepsie biofilter, Fabric Softener biofilter, Davis/Environmental Resolutions biofilter, Weyerhaeuser biofilter, Serigraph biofilter, Mercedes-Benz Biofilter, Rag Dryer biofilter, Flexographic Printing biofilter, and Reemtsma Biotrickling biofilter. Various streams of waste air loaded with odors and low concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were treated in a large biofilter at the wastewater treatment plant of a fine chemical production facility. The original pre-humidification system, consisting of three packed-bed humidifiers in parallel, rapidly clogged because of biomass growth and because the structured packing material was not compatible with the treated VOCs. At the initially high inlet concentrations and VOC loadings, the biofilter also generated and released products of incomplete biooxidation, primarily acetic acid, causing odor problems, gradual acidification of the media, and corrosion of the galvanized ductwork.
