ABSTRACT

Little known Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous inarticulate craniid brachiopods from the Ukraine are examined for their shell ultrastructure. A new form, ‘Craniscus’ izyumensis n. sp. is described from the Upper Oxfordian (Late Jurassic) of eastern Ukraine, and a new Early Cretaceous (Berriasian) craniid genus,Conocrania, type C. spinacostata from Crimea, is diagnosed, and the type species redescribed in detail. SEM reveals a layer of coarse rhomboidal crystals between the primary layer of acicular calcite and the secondary laminar layer. C. spinacostata usually has a double-layered strongly recrystallized shell: a primary layer of small crystals, and a secondary layer of laminae.
