ABSTRACT
There are many reasons to want to change the composition of a natural water source or a wastewater stream, and many of these involve changes in the carbonate equilibria. Most waters contain a significant quantity of dissolved carbon dioxide, and many contain significant amounts of calcium or magnesium. Engineers attempt to modify the composition of water to protect health or the environment, to minimize corrosion of equipment, or to optimize the water for some other chemical process.
