ABSTRACT

This chapter describes methods of estimating bioconcentration and bioaccumulation factors in fish, animals, and plants. Bioconcentration is the accumulation of chemicals from environmental media by nondietary routes. The bioconcentration factor, BCFoRGN (kg medium/kg organism or m3 medium/kg organism), is the ratio of the steady-state concentration of chemical in an organism to the concentration of chemical in the organism's environment:

The literature prior to 1980 focused on bioconcentration in fish; it has been reviewed by Bysshe (1990) and Briggs (1981).
