ABSTRACT

Clamps are very useful when it is desirable to attach quickly and easily two machine parts to each other so that they can be separated without damage. The two parts may be held together with what is designated force closure or form closure. Clamping devices are employed extensively. For example, a lid on a coffee can is a form closure clamping device, where the lid has a close fit; when it is pressed onto the can, friction holds the two parts together. Cover catches constitute one of the most common clamping devices. A large clamping force can be obtained with this clamping device, which combines screw and links and makes use of a toggle-like motion. This principle is used to remove bearings from shafts.
