ABSTRACT

Virtually every aspect of confined space entry requires employee training. Regardless of the characteristics of the space, or the size and type of the facility, there are some universal educational principles that can be applied to all confined space training. This chapter addresses those universal principles in three ways. First, it identifies the goals that confined space training must achieve. Second, it explains how one can reach those goals through the practical application of adult learning theory. Third, it outlines a step-by-step approach to develop and tailor a confined space training program that fits the organization's needs. The training program must develop skills which enable supervisors to verify that the permit has been completed properly, that all specified tests have been conducted and that all necessary procedures and equipment are in place. Developing a training program include five steps described as conducting a needs assessment, setting goals and objectives, selecting a training method, doing the training, and performing an evaluation.
