ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with the analysis of square-wave power converters based on the low-frequency behavior models. It develops a good understanding of the converter characteristics for various operating conditions. Knowledge of such characteristics is essential for the design of closed-loop regulators. The chapter considers the steady-state output voltage, the small-signal equivalent circuit, the transfer function between a small change in the dc input voltage and the resultant change in the dc output voltage, and the transfer function between a small change in the duty cycle and the resultant change in the dc output voltage. In the course of the analysis, it was found that manual analysis is very helpful in understanding converter characteristics. However, it is difficult to include in the manual analysis stray elements such as the effective series resistance of the output filtering capacitor or the internal impedance of the dc supply.
