ABSTRACT

One of the easiest, yet most useful tools for a team to use in its process improvements is the Run Chart. Perhaps because it is so easy to construct, teams think that it may not be useful. Nothing could be farther from the truth, and as with all tools, the Run Chart has its place. Sometimes called a Trend Chart, the Run Chart helps track data over a specific time period and enables the team to spot patterns or trends. This chart can also be used to spot unusual events or to continuously monitor performance. Run charts are very common and appear in daily publications, such as those on the financial pages which show the rise and fall of the stock market. The chart will show increasing or decreasing trends, and may assist the team in potential process changes. The primary requirement is basic understanding of the uses for the chart, data, a pencil, paper, and ruler.
