ABSTRACT
In a carbon steel it is possible to have a structure consisting either of parallel plates of carbide in a ferrite matrix, the distance between the plates depending upon the rate of cooling, or of carbide spheroids in a ferrite matrix, the size of the spheroids depending on the temperature to which the hardened steel was heated.
