ABSTRACT

Dichlorodifluoromethane, dichlorotetrafluoromethane, and trichloromonofluoromethane are classified as aerosol propellants. These substances are prohibited for nonessential uses in self-pressurized containers, such as cosmetic products, but are allowed in pharmaceuticals. Applications for new pharmaceuticals must demonstrate that there are no technically feasible alternatives to the use of chlorofluorocarbons, that the product provides a substantial health benefit, and that usage would not involve a significant release of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) into the atmosphere.
