ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Viesgo Generación S. L. has modernised the Doiras Dam, constructed between 1930 and 1934, on the River Navia (Asturias-SPAIN), following a multi-disciplinary model and applying the concept of ecological modernisation. We endeavour to achieve optimum productivity from installations that were built sixty years ago and improve the dam safety, by means of the correct environmental management, with the approval of the inhabitants of the zone. In 1989, we started the task of modernisation, which consisted of modifications to the surface spillway, installation of auscultation equipment and renovating the bottom outlet. The latter is the most significant activity of its kind to be carried out to date, and is the modification that is described in this article. In view of the fact that the reservoir is highly singular, because of the characteristics of the region - where different authorities have jurisdictional powers and co-exist in the same region - and because of the way in which the development of the project has been approached, the experience will serve to establish a set of guidelines that other companies can apply to deal with situations of a similar nature.
