ABSTRACT

Certain volatile organic compounds produce objectionable by-products when thermally oxidized. Most common is hydrogen chloride/chlorine gas and sulfur dioxide/trioxide. There are two major types of gas scrubbing systems: wet and dry. Within these two types are many variations. There will be some differences between equipment provided by different suppliers. Also, the nature of the pollutant species can impact the design of the gas scrubbing system design. Wet scrubbers receive their name from the fact that liquids are used as a scrubbing medium and the by-products of the scrubbing system are a liquid solution or slurry. Wet scrubbers can serve two simultaneous functions: particulate collection and acid gas control. Gas absorption towers can be divided into two categories: those that disperse liquid over a plate or packing, and those that create a spray of droplets. Both systems rely on the creation of a large liquid surface area.
